Both our Atlantic 85 (Porthcawl Lifeboat) and D Class (Porthcawl ILB) were launched at the request of UK Coastguard to search for and assist two people cut off by the incoming tide in darkness near Llantwit Major. The exact location of the casualties was unclear and other search units involved included Llantwit Major Coastguard Team, Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 187 based at St Athan and Barry Dock Lifeboat. Porthcawl Lifeboat arrived on scene within 15 minutes and commenced a search from Atlantic College. As it arrived at Llantwit Major Beach the Coastguard Helicopter located the two casualties to the east of Stout Point. Porthcawl Lifeboat put a crew member ashore to reassure the casualties and assess conditions for extraction by lifeboat. While conditions would have allowed for extraction by Porthcawl ILB Lifeboat the Coastguard Helicopter made the decision they would winch the casualties to safety. Once the casualties had both been winched to safety the crew man was recovered by Porthcawl ILB. All lifeboats were stood down and returned to their stations.
