UK Coastguard paged Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew following a 999 call reporting that two girls were struggling in the current and being swept out to sea at Ogmore By Sea and were in danger of drowning.

Porthcawl’s D Class was launched at Newton Beach, making best speed to Ogmore. Coastguard Teams from Llantwit Major, Porthcawl and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter were all also tasked to the incident. When the D Class lifeboat arrived at Ogmore it was established the two girls had been helped to safety by a surfer shortly before the lifeboat arrived on scene. The crew beached the lifeboat and went ashore to provide casualty care and were met on the beach by a team member from Llantwit Major Coastguard.

The girls were shaken but were otherwise in good spirits. They were advised to attend hospital for a check up due to concern for secondary drowning. The Coastguard Helicopter and lifeboat crew were stood down once the girls were in the care of the Coastguard Teams and with a parent / guardian.
