Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were paged by HM Coastguard following a report that a child was cut off on the Newton side of the Ogmore river and separated from parents on the Ogmore side.
The charity’s D Class Hugo Missen was launched on service. Once on scene it was met by approximately 40 people all on the banks of the river. Due to the risk of them attempting to cross the river the crew requested support from the charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose of the Shires. Once the Atlantic 85 lifeboat arrived on scene all casualties were assisted across the river to avoid anyone entering the water and getting into difficulty.
In a coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
If you ever find yourself in difficulty in the water, remember Float to Live:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax, breathe normally and move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
- It’s ok if your legs sink, we all float differently
- Once you’re over the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety
Remember it. Practise it. Share it.
