The station’s flag is flying at half mast, upon hearing of the passing of David Shillaw, Chairman of the Porthcawl RNLI events and fundraising group.

David joined the Porthcawl RNLI fundraising branch in 1999 and became treasurer in 2000, a role he fulfilled until 2018. In 2018 David became chairman of the branch which was renamed Porthcawl RNLI events and fundraising group.

Lifeboat Operations Manager Philip Missen MBE said, ‘David organised or was involved in many of our most successful fundraising events and campaigns including our 50th Anniversary events, Nessa Pushes The Boat Out for the RNLI, Porthcawl Food and Fashion Festival, RescueFest, the annual dinner at the Hi-Tide to name just a few.

‘During David’s time as chairman Porthcawl RNLI had the most successful fundraising year ever and he would often call in favours and use contacts he had within the music industry to secure various acts for events.

‘Everyone involved at Porthcawl RNLI are most grateful for his tireless service to the station in raising funds towards saving lives at sea. We send our heartfelt condolences to David’s wife Pat and his family and friends.’
