Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were paged by HM Coastguard following a report a swimmer had been swept around the end of Porthcawl’s breakwater in the strong tidal current on the outgoing tide.
The Coastguard had also made a “Mayday” call on channel 16 asking for the assistance in rescuing the swimmer and a local pleasure boat which was in the vicinity attempted to help but was unable to get close enough into the shore to assist. Porthcawl’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat was launched and made good speed to the incident.
The lifeboat arrived just as the female swimmer was helped to safety onto rocks at the rear of the breakwater by members of the public. She was checked over by shore crew and found to be safe and well and not in need of any medical attention. The lifeboat was stood down from the incident and returned to station.
Β In a coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
