Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were tasked by HM Coastguard this afternoon following a 999 call from a fishing boat which had a line caught around its propellor.
The charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose of the Shires was launched on service and made best speed to the casualty’s location off Newton Point.
The line which had caught around the casualty vessel’s propellor was attached to an anchor and had been pulling the stern of the vessel down. As the lifeboat was arriving on scene the line snapped and the vessel began to drift freely.
Once the lifeboat was alongside the casualty vessel the helm assessed the situation. As the casualty vessel still had a fouled propellor and no forward propulsion the helm made the decision the best way to assist the casualty’s onboard was to take the vessel in tow to Porthcawl marina.
Once the casualty vessel was safely alongside a pontoon in the marina the lifeboat returned to station where it was made ready for service.
