Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were paged by HM Coastguard following a report that two people had come off a Personal Water Craft (PWC / jetski) at the river mouth at Ogmore and were in the water.
Both the charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose of the Shires and D Class lifeboat Hugo Missen were launched on service and made best speed to the location. Once on scene the casualties, a mother and daughter were located in the surf along with their PWC which had been swept ashore into the shallows.
Crew members from the D Class went ashore to help the casualties from the water and check they were not in need of no casualty care. The casualties were assisted back to Newton car park by our volunteer shore crew who had arrived at Newton ready to recover the D Class at that location. Crew made sure the PWC was safely located above the high water mark and it was recovered the following day by members of the Newton powerboat club.
In a coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
If you ever find yourself in difficulty in the water, remember Float to Live:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax, breathe normally and move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
- It’s ok if your legs sink, we all float differently
- Once you’re over the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety
Remember it. Practise it. Share it.
