Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew were paged by HM Coastguard following multipe 999 calls reporting 2 people in the water in difficulty at Ogmore River mouth. The lifeboats were tasked as part of a multi agency response.
The charity’s Atlantic 85 Rose of the Shires and D Class Hugo Missen were launched on service and made best speed to Ogmore. Once on scene the lifeboats commenced a search of the area along with the Coastguard Helicopter and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Porthcawl, Port Talbot and Llantwit Major. The D Class crew located an upturned dinghy but there was no sign of its occupants. Shortly after the Atlantic 85 crew spotted two people in water in the surf line and two crew went to assist them to safety. They were the people from the upturned dinghy. The casualties were checked over by paramedics and the lifeboats were then stood down from the incident.
In a coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
If you ever find yourself in difficulty in the water, remember Float to Live:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax, breathe normally and move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat
- It’s ok if your legs sink, we all float differently
- Once you’re over the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety
Remember it. Practise it. Share it.
