UK Coastguard paged our volunteers who launched our Atlantic 85 lifeboat to rescue two kayakers who had got into difficulty off Porthcawl seafront. One had climbed onto Fairy Buoy (located approximately 3/4 of a mile off the seafront). Whilst he was on the buoy his kayak got swept away by the tide. His friend went after the kayak but then found he was unable to get back against the tide.

Thankfully the kayaker on Fairy Buoy had a mobile phone with him and was able to call for help. Whilst we were in the process of launching the pair were monitored by our colleagues from RNLI Lifeguards. Porthcawl Coastguard were also tasked to the incident and met us upon our return at the lifeboat station.

The Bristol Channel has the second largest tidal range in the world resulting in fast moving tides and currents. Always check tide times and #RespectTheWater
