Porthcawl’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat was launched to a swimmer in difficulties at the end of the pier. The swimmer was being swept out to sea by the strong current swirling around the end of the pier due to the outgoing tide. He was being supported by a fisherman from above using a net connected to a rope.

The crew were already on the slipway washing the Atlantic 85 lifeboat down from an earlier callout to a broken down speed boat and were alerted to the incident simultaneously by both our deputy launch authorities who had spotted the incident and the fishermen calling for help. The lifeboat was launched to the swimmer within minutes and once onboard the lifeboat he was checked over but required no further medical attention.
