Our volunteers launched our Atlantic 85 in total darkness following a report of a person calling for help and flashing a light off Marcross Beach (Near Nash Point).

The Atlantic 85 made best speed to the scene in fairly difficult sea conditions. Once on scene the lifeboat crew conducted a search of the area whilst our colleagues from Llantwit Major Coastguard conducted a shore based search and spoke with people present in the car park. Following further investigations it appeared that the first informant may have mistaken the light on the East Nash Buoy for a flashing torch light.

Having thoroughly covered the search area UK Coastguard were happy there was no one in danger and stood down the lifeboat, the call being a false alarm with good intent. The lifeboat arrived back at station at 12.30am.

If you see someone in trouble on the coast or have concerns for something you’ve seen dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
