Our Atlantic 85 lifeboat was launched to a surfer caught in the rip current at Rest Bay. He had been swept around the point in a South Easterly direction towards town. The lifeboat was quickly on scene and found the surfer approximately 150 metres offshore of the cove area of Rest Bay being assisted by a local Stand Up Paddleboarder.

The initial call had been made to UK Coastguard by National Coastwatch Institution – Porthcawl who were monitoring Rest Bay via CCTV and were able to provide a live link of the CCTV to the UK Coastguard’s Coordination Centre until the surfer was swept out of sight of the camera.

The surfer was brought onboard the lifeboat where he was checked over by the crew and taken back to the lifeboat station. With no further medical attention required he was then taken back to his car at Rest Bay by Porthcawl Coastguard who had also been tasked to the incident.
