The Atlantic 85 lifeboat was launched on service following a tasking request from UK Coastguard.

The Coastguard had received a report of an object floating over 500m off Irongate Point that resembled two people possibly on kayaks. Initially Porthcawl Coastguard Team responded to investigate but with the object being some distance off the shore and in failing light they were unable to confirm exactly whether the object was floating debris or people in distress when investigating with their binoculars.

The Coastguard team requested that the lifeboat was tasked to investigate what the item was. The lifeboat was conned onto the location by the Coastguard team and was able to confirm it was a large log with branches poking out the water. The call was therefore a false alarm with good intent.Β The lifeboat was stood down and returned to station to be made ready for service.

In a coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
